Biz Bits: Apple® Computers, Devices Option in Chico

Home - Where is Experimac - Biz Bits: Apple® Computers, Devices Option in Chico

Looking for an Apple® computer or device, but not quite ready to pay full retail price? Here’s an option.

Chris Thomas has opened an Experimac franchise at 1354 East Ave., in the Safeway center near Pleasant Valley High School.

Inside, he sells pre-owned Apple computers, accessories and devices, as well as offering repair and upgrade services for laptops, phones and tablets. Thomas also takes trade ins of existing devices.

According to his press release, he worked 20 years as a utility craftsman for the state and then became a mechanical supervisor at an ag processing plant before deciding to become his own boss.

SHOUT OUT

Right next to Experimac is The Dog House hot dogs. Owner Chuck Avril got a nice shout-out at last week’s Bidwell Park and Playground Commission meeting.

In addition to two hot dog restaurants, Avril also provides the concession services at Bidwell Park’s One-Mile Recreation Area.

The commission was looking at changes to his concession lease contract, bringing it in line with other city leases. It wasn’t anything out of the ordinary; just getting city leases more organized and consistent.

Both Assistant City Manager Chris Constantin and Parks and Natural Resource Manager (aka chief of Bidwell Park) Dan Efseaff had compliments about what Avril has done with the concession.

Back several years, the city decided it would be of community benefit to revive the One-Mile concession stand and asked for proposals. After a multi-month process, the Dog House prevailed. The agreement means sharing 15 percent of the concession stand revenue with the city.

One item that Constantin noted was that Avril was able to conduct business by using mostly locally-sourced food and that most of his employees reside locally. Avril also invested about $35,000 in getting the long-unused food stand up to code and usable, but he is getting payback in sales.

The One-Mile stand is only open during the summer, but you can also catch his hot dog creations at his restaurants. Besides the one by Pleasant Valley, his other Dog House is in the Safeway center on the corner of West Sacramento and Nord avenues.

FLOATING

One of the few businesses in the area that rents kayaks has relocated, and perhaps people are having trouble finding it.

Owner Leona Barranca of Gold City Kayaks is now at 1341 Huntoon St., in Oroville.

Folks who don’t have enough room to store a kayak or aren’t sure they want to invest in a purchase can try them out.

While she is in walking distance to the Feather River, Barranca said her kayaks don’t have to stay in the area, which could be a big deal for those interested in the extra-water flows up the Feather River Canyon or getting into ocean kayaking. Lessons are available, she noted.
