Leaving Corporate America to Forge New Careers as Tech Entrepreneurs

Jim Spisak and his daughter, Jamie, both made a business decision that would change their lives for the better. Jim, 59, and Jamie 28, both left careers in corporate America to launch a business of their own. Just last month, the father-daughter duo will open their Experimac franchise location at 4709 W. Park Rd. in Plano, Texas, a company that buys and sells used Apple products.

Career Change Met with Support

Such changes in careers were once met with uncertainty, but in today’s economy, this type of life changing career decision is met with positivity and support. As a matter of fact, more and more people are doing just that. According to a Harris Poll of 1553 unemployed people, nearly one-fifth people quit their jobs due to an improved economy and labor market.

These astounding numbers might come as a surprise, but in actuality each month, nearly three million Americans voluntarily leave their jobs. According to the most recent figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 2.7 million people voluntarily quitting their jobs in September. These numbers have held steady for the past thirteen months after becoming increasing steadily since the end of the recession.

Venturing Out on the Entrepreneurial Route

Spisak is a thirty-eight year old veteran of the tech industry, working with companies such as IBM, Honeywell, and Motorola, primarily in customer service and technical support areas. Most recently, he was senior vice president of operations and quality with Ocular LCD Displays who filed for chapter seven bankruptcy in November 2014.

Rather than pursuing another corporate position, both Spisak and his daughter decided to go the entrepreneurial route together and agree that this has been a great decision. Not only does Experimac have a great business model for buying a selling used Apple products, but it’s part of a retail technology sector that’s booming and only continues to get larger. In 2014, about 302 million computers were sold worldwide, generating about $304 billion in sales revenue.

Since Experimac specializes in selling used Apple products, these products can be sold at a price point that is accessible to a wide range of customers. Customers are more likely to buy at Experimac because not only is it more affordable, but also they can stay up-to-date by getting the latest in technology that Apple has to offer.

Looking to Open Additional Experimac Locations

Because this industry has been thriving, Spisak hopes to be able to open additional Experimac locations in the future to serve what has always been a strong market. Apple products retain their value much better than many other brands, even if they’re used Apple products. Experimac offers loyal Apple customers a unique middle ground where they can still maintain their loyalty to the Apple brand and stay current with operating systems and updates, but pay a fraction of the price they might pay at the mall or a competitor’s site.

Spisak is excited about the new Experimac concept and can’t wait to open. He believes that he doesn’t have any competition that offers the broad range of products and services that Experimac does.
